some of the reports need the notes (kind counting) so its faster to walk the notes table itself, not the index.
if you're just counting alone, you could just walk the index. in theory it could be slightly faster since it's not paging in as much data (assuming lmdb pages in values next to keys), but i don't think it would be a huge difference.
