It was a pain years ago, now there are so many options for one-click installs without ever having to touch a command line, so if anything I'd say it has gotten much much easier lately, esp for the not so technical. Force closes were indeed a problem, but have mostly been fixed in recent LND versions. It does require some effort to do it yourself, like most things. But once you've got everything set up it's a very rewarding experience. You're still technically managing a server, so certainly it's not for everyone.
