The easiest way to recognize someone in this overwhelmed state is through their habit of "false equivalence", where they make broad, sweeping statements that encompass everything and anything, and then declare the entire topic irrelevant because "it is all the same".
If it is all the same, then you don't need to pay any attention because nothing is better or worse than anything else, so you don't need to select one for support or attack, or offer a viable third option, and can remain inactive.
This is also a way to refuse responsibility. Only someone who takes a stance on a topic can be wrong. So, you just say, "All stances are wrong, so I refuse to even discuss the topic!" and feel very clever.
