I think that likes on #nostr are the same as a smile in real life. Stranger or not, giving someone a smile is an incredibly powerful way of acknowledging another human being. Likes on Nostr, in the absence of a dedicated tool, are the next best thing to a smile, a no strings attached acknowledgment that you are seen or heard, regardless of your views or opinions.

Likes are fundamental to #nostr because there is no other way to politely acknowledge to someone whose post has no value that they were seen. Some posts are not worth a comment, are not inspiring, have no value in any sense. However, just like in real life, knowing that you have been seen or heard is important, and often reassuring. A simple like is a powerful way to let someone know in a land of no algorithms, that they were seen. Gm!
